normalの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 nōrmālis（直角の・規準どおりの）から。norma（直角定規・規準）+ -ālis（〜に関する形容詞をつくる） で、もとは大工の直角定規のこと、「定規に当てたとおり」が原義である。
定規どおり＝ずれていない、というところから「規準に合った→普通の・正常な」になった。normal temperature（平熱）、back to normal（元どおり）のように、名詞では「平常の状態」も指す。
norm を見たら「規準・型」。norm（規範）・normal・enormous（規準の外へ＝並外れた）と並べると、定規のイメージが共通しているのが見える。
