ラテン語 geōmetria に由来し、英語では geometer（幾何学者）に -y が付いた名詞の形で定着した。後半は *meh₁-（測る）に遡る。
字義は「大地を測ること」。土地の区画や面積を測る技術から出発し、やがて図形と空間一般を扱う「幾何学」になった。
*meh₁- の系列は meter（メートル・計器）・metric・diameter（直径）・perimeter・symmetry（測り合う→対称）・isometric と広い。-meter/-metry を見たら「測る」と読める。
