覚え方
古フランス語 mathematique を経て英語に入った語で、mathematic + -ics（学問分野や活動を表す） の形になっている。physics・economics・politics と同じ作りで、-ics で終わる分野名は語尾が s でも単数扱い（Mathematics is difficult.）。
イギリス英語では maths、アメリカ英語では math と略し、s の扱いが分かれるのはこの -ics の名残。形容詞は mathematical、人は mathematician。
