balanceの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古フランス語 balance（天秤）から。背景にある *dwi-（二つ）が示すとおり、二枚の皿を吊るして重さを比べる道具、というのが原義。
左右が釣り合った状態から「均衡・平衡」、動詞で「釣り合いを取る」、さらに帳簿で貸方と借方を突き合わせることから「差引残高」の意味も生まれた（bank balance＝預金残高）。二皿の天秤を思い浮かべれば、体のバランスからお金の残高まで一つの絵に収まる。
補足: 日本語の「バランス」は均衡の意味しか担わないので、英語の balance が「残高」を指す用法は別に覚えておくとよい。
