hold1の語源と覚え方
覚え方
「hold」は古英語 healdan（制御を保つ・監視する・守る） にさかのぼる。何かを手元に押さえて離さないことが原義となり、現代英語の「握る・持つ・保持する」になった。
手で物を保持することから、場所や状態を「保つ」、人や物を中に「収容する」、さらに会議などをその場に保って「開催する」という意味へ広がった。hold a meeting は、会議を手元にしっかり保つイメージから「会議を開く」となる。
holder（保持する人・容器）、holding（保有物）、uphold（支える・支持する）、withhold（差し控える）、behold（見る）など、接頭辞によって保持の方向や対象が変わる。hold は「手元に押さえて、状態を保つ」と覚えるのがコツ。
