betweenの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 betwēonum = be（〜のそばに）+ twēonum。twēonum は「二つずつ」を表す形で、「二つのもののそばに」から「〜の間に」になった。
奥にあるのは 「二」を表す語 で、two・twin・twice・twilight（もとは「第二の光・半分の光」＝薄明）と同じ一族。between の中に「二」が入っていると見えれば、意味も綴りも忘れにくい。betwixt は同じ作りの古風な形。
補足: 二者の間は between、三つ以上に囲まれた漠然とした中は among。ただし複数でも一つ一つを個別に意識するときは between も使う（an agreement between the five countries）。
