覚え方
ラテン語 rādīcālis（根の・根本的な）は、rādīx（植物の根・基礎）+ -ālis（名詞から関係を表す形容詞を作る語尾）という構造を持つ。地中の根が植物を支えることから、「物事の根本に関わる」という意味になり、表面的な変更ではなく基礎から変えようとする「急進的な・過激な」へ発展した。
radical の中心イメージは、枝葉ではなく「根まで届くこと」である。radically（根本的に）や radicalism（急進主義）も同じ発想で、radic を見たら『根・基礎』と読むと、急激な変化を表す意味を覚えやすい。
