personの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古フランス語 persone（人・教区司祭）から入った語。英語では「一人の人間」を指す最も基本的な語になった。
ただし単なる生物としての人ではなく、社会の中で役割と人格を担う「個人」という感覚を含む。法律の legal person（法人＝人として扱われる存在）、文法の first person（一人称）も、この「役割としての人」の用法。
古フランス語では「教区司祭」も指したため、同じ語から英語 parson（教区牧師）が分かれた。person と parson は綴り違いの兄弟である。複数はふつう people で、persons は法律文や掲示など硬い文脈に残る。
