ラテン語 anatomia（身体の解剖）= ἀνατομή（切り開くこと・解剖）+ -ia（抽象名詞をつくる）。原義は「切り分けること」で、体を切り開いて構造を調べる学問＝解剖学になった。
*temh₁-（切る）に遡り、atom（それ以上切れないもの＝原子）・epitome（切り取った要点＝縮図）・tome（切り分けた一巻）と同族。「切る」から「構造」へという流れをおさえる。
比喩でもよく使い、the anatomy of a crisis（危機の解剖＝構造分析）のように「仕組みを分解して見せること」を指す。形容詞は anatomical。
