覚え方
ギリシャ語 μέσος（真ん中の）から作られた解剖・歯科の用語で、体や歯列の正中線に近いほうを指す。反対側は distal（正中から遠いほう）。
歯科では隣り合う歯のうち前歯側の面を mesial surface と呼ぶ。日常語ではまず使わないが、専門文脈では位置を示す基本語である。
同じ μέσος の系統に mesoderm（中胚葉）・Mesozoic（中生代）・Mesopotamia（二つの川に挟まれた地）がある。meso- を見たら「真ん中」と読めばよい。
