ギリシャ語 σῶμᾰ（体）から。心に対する「身体」を指す学術語で、生物学では生殖細胞に対する「体細胞」を soma と呼ぶ。
psychosomatic（心身の）・somatic（身体の）・chromosome（色づく体→染色体）が同じ一族で、soma/-some の部分が「体」。
インドの神話に出る神酒や、小説に登場する薬の名も soma だが、そちらは別の語。
