soul は古英語 sāwol（生物の非物質的な本質・精神部分）を受け継ぐ語で、その背後には「囲む・縛る」を表す *sh₂ey- がある。身体の内側に保たれ、その人をその人として成り立たせるもの、というイメージで捉えられる。
そこから soul は、宗教的な「魂」だけでなく、人の「精神」や「生命エネルギー」、さらに「その人の本質」を指すようになった。soul を見たら、身体の内に保たれる生命と精神の中心を思い浮かべると、意味の広がりをまとめて覚えられる。
