hero は hērōs（英雄・半神）に由来する。古くは、特別な力や身分を持ち、人々を守る存在を指したため、hērōs（英雄・半神）から「勇敢で称賛される人物」という意味へ発展した。

そこから hero は、現実の英雄だけでなく、物語の中心となる主役や、模範となる人物も表すようになった。heroine（女性の主人公）や heroic（英雄的な）も同じ仲間で、hero を見たら「人々を守る中心人物」と覚えると、英雄と物語の主役の両方の意味をつかみやすい。
