jewelの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古フランス語 jouel（宝石）から入った語で、その背後は印欧祖語 *yek-（口に出す）。もとは「楽しませるもの・戯れ」につながり、そこから「人を喜ばせる小さな贈り物→装身具→宝石」と移った。
だから jewel は原石ではなく「加工されて身に着ける形になったもの」が中心。gem が石そのものを指すのに対し、jewel は指輪やブローチなどの品を指すことが多い。集合的には jewelry（米）／jewellery（英）。
*yek- は joke（冗談）とも同じ出どころで、「口にして楽しませる」が jewel と joke に分かれたと考えると覚えやすい。比喩の the jewel in the crown は「最も価値のあるもの・目玉」。
