覚え方
ラテン語 adamās（極めて硬い金属や石・ダイヤモンド）が、語形を崩しながら入った語。「何をもってしても打ち砕けないもの」という含みが、そのまま最も硬い宝石の名になった。
宝石のほかに、その形から「ひし形」、トランプの「ダイヤ」、野球の「内野」も diamond。a diamond in the rough（磨けば光る原石＝素質のある人）・a diamond wedding anniversary（ダイヤモンド婚式）のような比喩・定型も多い。
同じ源から出た英語が adamant（頑として譲らない）で、こちらは「砕けない」という原義を意味の側に残している。diamond と adamant はどちらも「砕けないもの」と並べて覚えるとよい。
