古英語 hyll（丘） をそのまま受け継いだ語。芯は *kelH-（高くなる・そびえる） で、周りより盛り上がった土地が原義である。
mountain との境目は厳密ではないが、hill はより低くなだらかで、登るのに登山装備が要らない規模を指すのが普通。a grassy hill（草の丘）、a hill town（丘の上の町）、up the hill / down the hill。
同じ「高くそびえる」の一族に excel（抜きん出る）・column（そびえ立つ柱）がいる。慣用表現も多く、over the hill（盛りを過ぎて）、an uphill battle（苦しい戦い）、not worth a hill of beans（取るに足らない）、the Hill（アメリカの連邦議会）。「まわりより一段高い」を芯にすると比喩も読み解ける。
