name（名前）+ sake（ため・目的）。for one's name's sake（その名のために）という言い方が縮んでできた語で、「その名にちなんだ人・名前の由来になった人」を指す。
sake の背後には *seh₂g-（たどる・追う）があり、もとは「言い分を追い求めること」だった。for the sake of ...（〜のために）という現代の言い方も、「〜の筋道に沿って」という感覚から来ている。seek（探し求める）が同じ流れの語である。
使い方は He is his grandfather's namesake.（祖父と同じ名だ）、The town's namesake is the explorer who founded it.（町名の由来はその探検家だ）のように双方向。「同名の人」という一点を押さえれば十分な語である。
