atomの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 atomus(分割できない・最小の粒)を取り込んだ語。語頭の a- は *ə-(〜でない・〜なしの)で、「これ以上切り分けられないもの」が原義。
古代の哲学者が想定した「物質の最小単位」の名が、そのまま近代物理に引き継がれた。実際には原子も分割できると分かったが、名前だけが残っている。
後半の「切る」部分は anatomy(切り開く=解剖)と共通。a- は否定、-tom は「切る」と読めば、atomic(原子の)・atomize(微粒子にする)もまとめて扱える。
