ラテン語 substantia = sub-（下に）+ stō（立つ）。「移ろう見た目の下に立って、支えているもの」という哲学の言葉が原義で、「本質・実体」、そこから「実体のある材料→物質」、「中身→重要性」へ広がった。
stō（立つ）の一族は substitute（下に立てる→代わり）・institute（立て込む→設立する）・consist（共に立つ→成り立つ）と巨大。st の綴りに「立つ」が潜む。substance の三つの訳語（物質・本質・重要性）は全部「下で支えて立つもの」。
