覚え方
capital はラテン語 capitālis（頭部の・生命に関わる・致命的な）に由来し、caput（頭・頂点・指導者・源泉）+ -ālis（関係を表す形容詞語尾）と分けられる。頭を「いちばん上」や「中心」と見る発想から、「主要な・最も重要な」という意味が生まれ、そこから資本や首都にも使われるようになった。
caput の背景にある *kap-（頭）がポイント。capital punishment の capital は「生命に関わる・致命的な」から「死刑の」、capital city は「中心となる都市」から「首都の」、capital investment は「主要な資産」から「資本の」と理解できる。capit- / capital を見たら「頭・頂点・主要なもの」と読むのがコツ。
