覚え方
英語 uppercase は upper（上の・上位の）と case（箱・入れ物）を組み合わせた語。upper はさらに up（上へ）に比較級を作る -er が付いてできている。
case はもともと物を入れる「箱・入れ物」を指す語で、活字を組んで印刷していた時代、大文字の活字は上段の箱に、小文字の活字は下段の箱に収められていたことに由来するとされる。そこから、大文字を uppercase、小文字を lowercase と呼ぶようになった。
upper（上の）＋ case（箱）＝「上の箱に入っている文字」というイメージのまま覚えると、uppercase と lowercase の対がすんなり頭に入る。
