upperの語源と覚え方
覚え方
upper は up（上へ）+ 比較を表す -er によってできた語で、上下を比べたときの「上の・上部の」を表す。現在は upper floor「上の階」、upper lip「上唇」のように、位置を示す形容詞として使う。
an upper limit は数値などの上限、the upper half は上半分を指す。二つの部分を上下に分け、上側にあるほうへ印を付けると覚えやすい。名詞では靴底を除く靴の上部も upper と呼ぶ。high が高さそのものを述べる場面に対し、upper は全体の中のどの部分かを示すため、lower「下の」と対にすると位置関係がはっきりする。
