覚え方
ラテン語 prīnceps（第一の・首長）は、prīmus（最初の・第一の）+ -ceps（〜を捕らえる者、という意味の語尾）からなる語で、「最初の位置を捕らえる者」が原義。これに、名詞から形容詞を作る -ālis が付いて prīncipālis（第一の・主要な）ができた。
「一番目に位置する、最も重要な」というイメージがそのまま受け継がれ、英語 principal は「（学校で）最も重要な立場の人＝校長」「主要な」、さらにお金の分野では「利子を生む元になるもの＝元金」を意味するようになった。
prīmus の語源は印欧祖語 *preh₂-（前に）にさかのぼるとされる。prin/prim を見たら「第一の・最初の」と読み、prince（第一人者→王子）とも同じ家族だと意識すると principal も覚えやすい。
