古英語 steorra（星・恒星）は、*h₂eHs-（乾く・熱を発する）、また *h₂eh₁s-（輝く・瞬く）というイメージと結びつく。夜空で熱を発し、光を放つものが star（星）であり、そこから人々の目を引く「有名人・スター」の意味が生まれた。
