ラテン語 gigās（巨人） から。神話に出てくる巨人の名として英語に入り、名詞「巨人」、形容詞的に「巨大な」を表すようになった。
同じ系統の英語に gigantic（巨大な）・gigantism（巨人症）があり、gig- は「巨大」と読める。単位の giga-（ギガ＝10 億倍）も同じ「大きい」イメージから来ている。
補足: a giant in the industry（業界の巨人）のように比喩でよく使う。gentle giant は「体は大きいが穏やかな人」。
