beastの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 bēstia（獣）から。人間と対比される「四つ足の動物・けもの」を指す、やや古風で重い語。
そこから「獣のような人・怪物」、さらに口語で「とてつもないもの・手強いもの」（That exam was a beast.）へ広がった。形容詞 bestial（獣のような）、名詞 bestiary（動物寓意集）が同族。
animal が生物学的な「動物」なのに対し、beast は野蛮さや大きさを感じさせる語。Beauty and the Beast（美女と野獣）の Beast はまさにその含み。
