覚え方
offspring は off-（〜から離れて・取り除く）+ spring（跳躍・春）。何かから離れて跳び出す、あるいは生まれて出てくるイメージから、「親から生まれて出てきたもの」つまり子供・子孫を表すようになった。
古い形 ofspring（子孫・子供） も同じ発想を示している。off- は「離れて」、spring は「跳び出す・生まれ出る」と読めば、offspring は「親から生まれ出た子」と覚えられる。
