覚え方
ラテン語 reclāmō（叫んで抗議する・言い返す）= re-（後ろへ・再び）+ clāmō（叫ぶ・大声で呼ぶ）。もとは「呼び返す・叫んで異議を唱える」で、英語では「呼び返して取り戻す」方向に意味が育った。
現在は reclaim one's rights（権利を取り戻す）、reclaim lost luggage（預けた荷物を引き取る）のように「本来自分のものを返してもらう」用法が中心。さらに reclaimed land（埋立地）、reclaim water（水を再生利用する）のように、捨てられた状態から使える状態へ戻す意味でも使う。
*kelh₁-（呼びかける） の仲間には exclaim（叫ぶ）・proclaim（宣言する）・clamor（騒ぎ立てる）がいる。claim は「声を上げて主張する」が芯で、re- が付くと「返せと声を上げる」になると読める。
