correlationの語源と覚え方
覚え方
correlation は correlate（相互に関連づける）に -ion が付いた名詞で、「互いに対応づけること」から「相関・関連」を表す。フランス語 corrélation（相関・関連）にも同じ形が現れ、二つ以上の事柄を並べて関係を確立するイメージにつながる。
語の背景にある *bʰer-（運ぶ）と *telh₂-（持ち上げる・耐える）を、二つの事柄を同じ場に運び上げて比べるイメージで覚えるとよい。correlate は関係づける、correlation はその関係そのものであり、coefficient of correlation（相関係数）や correlated（相関した）にもそのまま応用できる。
