ラテン語 mōnstrum(神の兆し・凶兆・不気味な生物)は、moneō(助言する・警告する)+ -trum(道具や結果を表す名詞語尾)からできた。moneō の背景にある *men-(考える)から、何かを考えさせ、注意を促すものという発想が生まれる。
神からの警告や異常な兆しを示すものが、次第に「奇怪な生物」、さらに「怪物・魔物」へと意味を変えた。monster は単なる大きな生物ではなく、見た人に警告を発する異形と覚えるとよい。monitor(監視・警告するもの)や admonish(注意する)も、警告のイメージで結びつく。
