覚え方
古英語 frec（貪欲な・大胆な）が freak の起源とされ、印欧祖語 *preg-（渇望する・貪る）にさかのぼる。「抑えがきかず衝動のままに大胆に振る舞う」というのが原義。
この「衝動的で並外れている」というニュアンスが、「気まぐれな思いつき」を経て「風変わりな人・物」「奇行に走る」という意味の freak になったとされる。「非常に珍しい」（freak accident＝異常な事故）という意味もここから広がった。
