ラテン語 addictus（割り当てられた・捧げられた・没収された）は、*ad-（〜へ）+ *deyḱ-（指し示す）という成り立ちをもつ。「ある対象へ指し向けられ、そこに捧げられた」状態から、特定の主人や対象に身を預けた人を指すようになった。
現代の addict は、物質や活動に強迫的に献身する「中毒者・依存者」、または人を依存させるものを表す。addicted to games のように、対象へ強く縛りつけられているイメージで覚えると、addiction（依存）や addictive（依存性のある）も理解しやすい。
