覚え方
about は古英語 onbūtan（～の周囲・おおよそ）に由来し、on-（上に・中へ）+ būtan（外側に・除いて）という組み合わせで捉えられる。「外側を回っている」位置感覚から、「～の周りに」「～について」という意味になった。
周囲をぐるりと見ると対象を正確に一点に絞らないため、距離や数量の「約」、話題の「～について」へも広がった。on- の背景にある *ana-（上に・中へ）と、周囲や約の感覚を強める *bi- を手がかりに、about は『対象の周辺を取り巻く』と覚えると、場所・話題・概数の用法をまとめて理解できる。
