astirの語源と覚え方
覚え方
a-（〜の状態にある）+ stir（動く・かき混ぜる） で「動き出して・起き出して」。朝、家じゅうが目を覚まして動き始めている、という場面で使う（The house was already astir.）。
stir の芯は *(s)twerH-（かき乱す・駆り立てる）で、静止していたものをかき回して動かすこと。a- の付くこの形は名詞の前に置かず、be 動詞の後ろで使うのがきまり（asleep・awake・afloat と同じ）。
やや文語的な語で、日常なら up and about（起き出して動き回って）が近い。「静から動への切り替わり」を表す語、と覚えるとよい。
