覚え方
almost は古英語系の almost（ほとんど・ほぼ）を受け継いだ語で、al-（すべて）+ most（最も多い）という発想。「全部ではないが、全部に最も近い」状態を表す。古英語 eall（全て・全体）や eallmǣst（ほぼ・ほとんど）にも、同じ組み立てが見える。
全体を表す *ala- から、範囲のほぼ全部に届いているという意味へ発展した。almost all は「ほとんど全て」、almost ready は「ほぼ準備ができている」のように使う。al- / all を見たら「全体」、そこに近さが加わって「ほぼ」と覚えるとよい。
