覚え方
ban は公に言い渡される布告や支配を表す部分で、そこに「与える」の don が続く a ban doner は、人や物を他人の支配下に引き渡すこと。自分の手を離してそちらへ委ねてしまう動きが、「放棄する・計画を断念する・見捨てる」になった。
手放したら戻らない、というのが芯。abandon a plan(計画を断念する)、abandon hope(希望を捨てる)のように、途中で完全に手を引く場面で使う。
bandon の部分を見たら「差し出して、もう戻らない」と読むと思い出しやすい。
