founder1の語源と覚え方

found（創設する）+ -er。ラテン語 fundātor（創設者）= fundō（創設する・定める）+ -tor（〜する人）で、fundō はさらに fundus（底・地所）から出ている。「土台を据える人」が founder の原義。
同じ綴りで「（船が）沈む・（計画が）頓挫する」を意味する founder も fundus（底）に関わる語で、こちらは「底へ行く」方向に意味が振れたもの。
