addict（依存する人）に状態を表す -ion を加えた語。addict はラテン語 addictus から来ており、これは addīcō（割り当てる・引き渡す）の過去分詞で、名詞では債権者に縛られた債務奴隷も指した。何かに身を引き渡し、縛られて離れられなくなった状態が addiction（依存症）だと考えるとつかみやすい。
綴りでは、先頭の ad は「〜へ」、dict は dīcō（言う）から来ている。「相手へ言い渡されて、そのものになる」と読むと、addict と addiction を結びつけやすい。
物質だけでなく活動にも使う（addiction to gambling＝ギャンブル依存）。
