depend（頼る）+ -ance（状態を表す）。中期フランス語 dépendance（依存・従属）から入った形で、意味は「依存」。
depend は *(s)pend-（引き伸ばす）にさかのぼり、pendant（垂れ飾り）・suspend（吊るす→中断する）・pending（宙づりの→未決の）と同じ系統。pend は「ぶら下がる」で、何かにぶら下がっている状態が「頼る」になった。
今の英語では dependence の綴りが標準で、dependance は古い綴り。形容詞は dependent、反対語は independence。
