中期フランス語 subordination につながる subordination は、あるものを別のものの下位に置くことや、その従属状態を表す。英語の subordinate（従属した・下位に置く）と一緒に覚えられる。組織図で、上の箱から下の箱へ指示が流れる関係を思い浮かべると、「誰が誰に従うのか」が見えてくる。
