英語 accept（受け入れる）+ -ance（状態・条件・行為を表す名詞）。ラテン語 acceptō（受け取る・受け入れる） は accipiō（受け取る）+ -tō（反復動作を表す語尾）、その accipiō が ad-（〜へ）+ capiō（取る・捕らえる）。
つまり「自分の方へ取る」→「繰り返し取る＝進んで受け入れる」という重ね方になっている。*kap-（つかむ・保持する） の系統で、capture・capable・receive・except（取り出す→除く）と同族。cap / cept は「つかむ・取る」。
公文書やニュースで頻度が高い名詞。新商品開発では consumer acceptance（消費者の受容度）、心理学では self-acceptance（自己受容）・acceptance of others（他者受容）のように、分野ごとの決まり文句で使われる。
