blessingの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 blētsung（祝福）= blētsian（祝福する）+ -ung（動詞から行為を表す名詞をつくる）。動詞 bless の側の名詞形で、「祝福するという行為」と「その結果さずかるもの」の両方を指す。
そこから「神の恵み」「ありがたいもの・幸運」へ広がり、食前の祈り（say a blessing）から、計画への「承認・お墨付き（give one's blessing）」まで使う。祈って良いものを与える → よし、と認めるという抽象化の流れで押さえる。
補足: blessing in disguise は直訳「変装した祝福」で、一見災難でも結果的にありがたい出来事のこと。Losing that job was a blessing in disguise. のように使い、日本語の「災い転じて福となす」に近い。
