古英語 dēofol(悪魔)が、綴りをやわらげながらそのまま現代語になった語。キリスト教とともに古英語期に入り、大文字の the Devil で「サタン」を指す用法が中心にある。
小文字の a devil は「悪魔・悪霊」から、人に向ければ「悪党」、逆に親しみをこめた「やんちゃ者」まで幅が広い。a devil of a job(とんでもなく厄介な仕事)・speak of the devil(噂をすれば影)・play devil's advocate(あえて反対の立場をとる)など成句が非常に多い。
