ラテン語 sēnsus（知覚の能力・感情）は、sentiō（感じる・知覚する）+ -tus（動作名詞を作る要素）からできた語。「感じること・感じ取ったもの」から、英語 sensation は「感覚・知覚」、さらに人の心を強く動かす「センセーション」へ意味が広がった。
sentiō の *sent-（感じる・考える）という感覚は、単なる五感だけでなく、心で察知したり判断したりすることにもつながる。sense（感覚・意味）・sentiment（感情・意見）・consent（共に感じる→同意する）なども同じ仲間で、sent を見たら「感じる・考える」と読むと覚えやすい。
