覚え方
ラテン語 odor（におい） をそのまま取り入れた語。よい香りにも悪い臭いにも使える中立の語で、「鼻で感じるもの」が芯。
pleasant odor（よい香り）・body odor（体臭、略して BO）のように、形容詞で方向を決めて使う。ただし単独の odor は悪い方に傾いて響きやすく、香りを褒めるなら scent や fragrance が自然。
綴りは米式が odor、英式は odour。派生語は odorless（無臭の）・deodorant（においを取り去るもの→制汗剤・消臭剤）で、odor の前後に付くだけなので見分けやすい。
