覚え方
中英語 propertee から。元はラテン語 proprius（自分自身の）に「〜であること」の語尾が付いた語で、「自分のものであること」→財産・不動産、「そのものに固有であること」→特性・性質という二本立ての意味になった。
proper（固有の→ふさわしい）・appropriate（自分のものにする→充当する／適切な）と同族。財産と特性が同居するのは不思議に見えるが、「その人・その物に固有のもの」という一つの核から出ている。
