ラテン語 sentiō（感じる・知覚する）から、英語 scent が生まれた。鼻で感じ取るものに意味が絞られ、特に動物の追跡に役立つ特徴的なにおいを指すようになった。
その背景にある *sent-（感じる・考える）は、外から来た刺激を受け取り、心や感覚で捉えるイメージを持つ。scent は視覚や聴覚ではなく、嗅覚によって感じる特徴を表す語として定着した。
