optics1の語源と覚え方
覚え方
opt はギリシャ語 ὄψῐς（視覚・外観）、ics は学問分野を表す語尾。「見ることに関する学」がそのまま「光学」になった。
physics（物理学）・ethics（倫理学）と同じ -ics の形で、-s が付いていても単数扱いになるのがふつうである。
近年は「世間にどう見えるか」という意味でも使われ、the optics of the decision（その決定の見え方・印象）のように言う。opt は「見る・目」と読めば、この新しい用法も原義どおりだと分かる。
