estate は、ラテン語 status（状態・地位）と結びつく語として、まず「立っている状態」や「社会的な立場」を表す。そこから、その人の地位に伴う財産や所有物、さらに土地・建物をまとめた「財産・大邸宅・団地」という意味へ広がった。

status の背景にある *steh₂-（立つ）を使って、estate を「自分が立っている場所・身分を支える財産」と覚えるのがコツ。state / status の仲間は「立っている状態」というイメージで、estate はその状態に結びつく土地や財産まで含む語と考える。
