覚え方
ラテン語 lībella（小単位・水準器・測量道具）は、lībra（天秤・重量単位）+ -lus（小さいものを表す接尾辞）からできた語。天秤で高さや重さの釣り合いを確かめる道具から、「水平な・均等な高さ」や「平らにする」という意味へ発展した。
lībra のさらに古いイメージは、注ぐことを表す *leyH-。液体を一定の高さまで注いでそろえる感覚から、level の「高さをそろえる」を連想できる。level は天秤や水準器で、同じ高さにそろった状態と覚えるとよい。
